Nutrition in pregnancy

Introduction Undoubtedly, a fundamental stage in the life of man is his training period in the womb, during which time it initiates the development of physical and mental characteristics of the individual, so that any deficiencies in that process training will be reflected in the future. It is therefore of vital importance that  the mother provides all necessary resources and the environment for growth and development of children during pregnancy. So we know it is very important maternal nutrition, as during pregnancy and lactation  nutritional requirements increase significantly.
Aims  To determine the importance of proper nutrition in pregnancy.
Methods Descriptive, epidemiological, analytical, prospective study based on an interview-survey, in patients in delivery room, it was used for analysis of 400 cases during 2002.
A complete medical record was performed (history, obstetrical situation, neonatal status). An evaluation of nutritional status was done taking into account antropometric measures of weight, size, week of gestation, and the ideal condition, weight gain during pregnancy. The neonate was studied based on weight and size.
Results Maternal nutritional status was: adequate 355 (88.75 %), deficient 15 (3.75 %), overweight 30 (7,5 %). Neonate nutritional status was: adequate 385 (95.51 %), deficient 6 (1,5 %), overweight 12 (2,99 %). There was a twin pregnancy and two fetal deaths.

Conclusions Proper nutrition is important for the mother even before the onset of pregnancy, since there is a direct relationship between nutrition and reproductive capacity, finding a lower fertility in women with nutritional deficiencies. In addition to the lack of sufficient food, which is observed in some populations, other factors that contribute to the occurrence of nutritional deficiencies, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, monitoring of diets and exercise to keep fit, or just interested in increasing protein intake. The pregnant women in spite of belonging to precarious socioeconomic layers with deficient food ingestion present an adequate maternal and neonatal nutrition level . We are in time to implement plans for increasing the standard of life and nutritional orientation.
